Pu'er

Turning Wheel raw pu'er 2021 and 2022

from $9.00

Yet another top-shelf tea first procured by us during our April 2008 tea buying trip in China. We have done 11 productions of a silver needle raw pu’er since 2008. The 2022 will follow in their footsteps like a little brother. We had 200 of these cakes pressed at a small pu'er workshop in SW China.

Both new and old raw pu'er drinkers will find their senses satisfied in a way that only Yong de area grown teas can accomplish. While many will brew this with boiling water, others will be happier with this in its smoother form at temps between 175 and 195. Try it both ways! Experiment. See special notes in “additional info” section.

The initial rinse of these leaves reveal the aroma of clover, sugar cane and sweet sage. In the cup, you’ll taste a bright tea liquor with plenty of minerals to round out the flavors of both sweet and savory that play nicely with the light fruity notes. This one would be a super way to introduce friends and family to raw pu’er!

This tea is entirely hand-processed from the picking of the sun-dried buds to the traditional pressing using old stone molds. Tong pricing (7 cakes wrapped in a bamboo sheath) is available in drop-down menu.

The wheel is turning and you can't slow down,
You can't let go and you can't hold on,
You can't go back and you can't stand still,
If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will. - Robert Hunter

Additional Info

Basic Brewing Instructions:

  • Raw Pu'er tea may be given a 5-10 second rinse (Ripe Pu'er may be given two 5-10 second rinses) with the same temperature water as used for brewing.

  • 195˚-212˚ F water temperature.

  • Use 1-3 teaspoons per 8 Oz. of filtered water.

  • Recommended first steeping of 30 seconds - 1 minute. Add 30 seconds for each subsequent infusion.

  • Special notes on this tea: Due to its young age, begin with lower water temps and shorter steeps, in that way you’ll get to experience more of the sweeter notes of the tea with less astringency. In later steeps, ramp up the water temp and time. We just completed a session in a 4 oz pot and used over 2.5 quarts of water before we were done. It’s got stamina, so take this leaf for a solid spin.

Tea brewing is meant to be a joyful exploration. There are no hard and fast rules. Experiment with the quantity of tea that you use, and steeping times. Enjoy discovering what your preferences are. They may change day to day.
